XL2J is comprised of 2 main components: a Structured Language Generator and a run-time Java Spreadsheet Engine.

The patented Structured Language Generator is a menu-driven Excel Add-in that (1) allows the Excel user to specify a spreadsheet's inputs and outputs, (2) analyzes and understands the equations and logic in the spreadsheet (3) converts the spreadsheet logic into the structured form required by Java.

The run-time Java Spreadsheet Engine consists of a Java application server and the Java Spreadsheet Engine. It contains all the functionality, including the Java libraries and classes, necessary for running and displaying the compiled code generated by the Add-in.

The Java servlets created by XL2J can either provide a template-driven HTML user interface, or they can create an XML-based machine-interface for J2EE integration with other IT initiatives. In future versions, XSLT-based templates will also be supported.

XL2J supports Java translations for over 220 Excel functions and for the most common VBA functionality called from Excel equations. Combined, this supports roughly 95% of scenarios used in financial institutions.

Integrating custom-built (XLL-based) Excel extensions is a much common request in real customer scenarios, hence XL2J provides an extensibility mechanism for wrapping XLLs for access from the generated Java objects.
